"Melissa..." Edd stammered. "Im so sorry."

"Doesnt matter. Spilt milk, I suppose." She muttered from behind the door.

"If you'd just give me a chance to explain Id"-

"Theres nothing to explain, Double D." she interrupted. "Eddy spoke for all of you."

"Eddy... um... Eddys always screwing up with things he says,
Mel." Comforted Edd, shaking his head. "To be honest I think
he carries around this attitude he has to compensate for his
own insecurites, believe me, it wasnt your fault."

"Like offence as a best defence, huh?" she asked.

"Yes, I suppose so." Edd put his ear and palms to the door.
Melissa heard them fall onto the wood and aligned her palms
with his on the other side. She closed her eyes as a tear
trickled down her cheek.

"I,,I cant stay here, Double D." she told him defiantly. "Im going home."

"You, you are?" gulped Edd, feeling himself quake with sadness. "Im sorry to hear that, Melissa."

"Um, you wouldnt have my hat with you, would you?" she asked with a tiny laugh.

Oh yes, here." Edd answered
Melissa cracked the door open and stuck her hand out. Edd handed her hat back to her. She fidgeted with it for a few seconds behind the door as Edd twiddled his thumbs uncomfortably.

"Um, Mel, it doesn't look as bad as you thi-I mean!" Edd flustered. "It's...it's um...different, but...not a bad diff-"

"I know what you mean, Edd." Melissa stopped him. She stepped back from the door and turned a lamp on. "Come in." she mumbled as she headed back to the huge bedroom window where she stood, looking out over the rooftops of the cul-de-sac. Edd stepped in gingerly and was hit with the smell of incense as soon as he closed the door.

" "Glittery, glittery, glittery!" he breathed as his eyes darted around the luxuriously decorated suite. The candles cast a surreal glow like a sunset over the room, and Edd winced from the light reflecting off the delicate crystal canopy hanging over Melissas Ivory bed. The soft carpet sifted under his sneakers as he walked quietly towards the couch next to her, all the while gaping at the many colourful and psychedelic fliers and posters scattered along her bedroom wall. Photographs of Melissa and other equally glitzy figures stared out questioningly from the shelves and surfaces.

"He noticed a collection of scrunched up paper at Melissa's feet, as if she had been trying to write something but had thrown them away in frustration...without a wastebasket to put said paper into. Edd stumbled slightly, not looking where he was going. Melissa turned sharply from the window to make sure he was okay.

"Oh my Gosh! Double dee, you're soaked!" Melissa fretted in guilt.

"Yeah, heh, it's really coming down out ther-atchoo!!!" Edd Sneezed, his body quaking with shivers. Melissa grabbed a fresh white towel from her closet and wrapped it around his shaking shoulders.

"Bless you!" Melissa said with a slight laugh.

"Heh, indeed!" Edd sniffed, pulling the towel around him and sitting down adjacent to Melissa by the window. They sat in silence for a moment or two.
"Yknow" she finally said. "In the big picture, the tapestry really doesnt mean anything. I mean, at the end of the day its just a rug, right?" She shrugged nonchalantly.

"Yes, but all the work you put"-

"What really bothered me, Double D" she interrupted, hardly listening. "Was that I was dumb enough to leave myself open. There I am, just trying to make friends and get on with things.I mean, you know I havent done anything to Eddy to make him so resentful!" she complained.

"I know, I know!" said Edd. "What you have to understand, Melissa, is that, well, due to want of a better word, Eddys as sick as a parrot with jealousy!" he explained.

"j-jealous?" she irked. "Why? what have I got that he hasnt?"

"Look around you, Mel!" stated Edd strongly, waving his hand to the beautiful mirrored wardrobes, the ceiling painted to look like the Vegas sky in the summer, the flashy posters from the cabaret shows were Melissa had spent the majority of her life. "Eddys stuck here in plain-old suburban picket fence Peace Creek for quite a while, and he knows it. Hes a 13-year-old kid with barely a dime in his pocket, the clothes his grandma bought him for Christmas that he hates and,me...boring, methodical, white-wash me...oh, and dont forget Ed." He said with a touch of lament. "And then you come along!" he pointed at her demonstratingly. "You, Daisy, Travis, youre like a walking Elvis Presley VH-1 Marathon, the three of you! Youre everything hes ever wanted to be! Youve got celebrity in your walk, you breathe it!"-

"No We dont!" denied Melissa, shaking her head with her arms folded sulkily.

"Oh yes you do!" argued Edd jokingly. " You know how much of Vegas has been implanted into you three from such an early age"

"I dont like that word "implanted", Double D!" she said as she bit her lip.

"Oh, you know what I mean!" he laughed, taking her hands in his. They both looked down and blushed.

"Um" stammered Edd, losing track. " All Im trying to say is Eddy has great admiration for you... he just isnt capable of showing it." Edd sighed, looking at the floor, referring to more than what he cared to expose. “Trust me, Mel, you aren’t the only one unfortunate enough to come into contact with Eddy’s total lack of acknowledgment to other’s feelings...”

“Huh?” Melissa perked up.

“Heh...yeah...” Edd nodded, scratching the back of his neck as he began. “ this year was pretty significant to Ed Eddy and I as it was the year we’d officially embark on the path of adulthood”-

“Y’all turned 13?” Melissa decoded Edd’s verbose narrative.

“Yes, um... “we y’all” turned 13, heh...” Edd shirked as Melissa giggled at his polite parroting. “ for Ed’s birthday in June we took him to the travelling freak unique circus that was in town that day so he could see with his own eyes the bearded lady, lizard boy and the quadrapalegic man that could...but didn’t...”

“Ooh, sounds right up Eds street, good thinking!” Melissa complimented, turning her polite admirer’s cheeks the same color as his shirt.

“ And for Eddy’s birthday in August”-

“Making him a Leo!” Melissa interrupted enthusiastically.

“Oh, I didn’t know that was his sign, interesting!” Edd pondered. “ What are the traits of a Leo-sign...not that I BELIEVE in that superstitious nonsense...”

“I’ll tell you after you tell me about Eddy’s birthday treat.” Melissa urged.

“Oh yes, that’s right...” Edd remembered. He enjoyed chatting so much with Mel, she was so engaging. “For Eddy’s birthday Ed and I saved all our allowance and my paper round and hired a limo for him to drive around in all day and wolfwhistle at the unsuspecting female pedestrians he drove past...it was funny the first 5 times but after the 50th “ hey baybee, wanna give my back seat a test drive?” it gets kinda old...”

Melissa was in hysterics laughing at Edd’s impersonation of a hormone-driven Eddy.

“Oh Lord, Double Dee, that was spot on!”

“Heh, they say I have the gift of mirth..” Edd grinned. “Good thing too. Laughing in the face of adversity seems to be a running practise being Eddy’s friend...” Edd’s eyes grew dim.

“So um...” Melissa started. “What did you party animals do for your birthday?”BR>
“Well, Ed made me my very own titanium Evil Tim ruthlessness repeller shield out of a coathanger, kitchen foil and one of Jimmy’s old retainers...” Edd shrugged his shoulders with a fed-up smile.

“Aww, its the thought that counts...and bless him, even Ed gets them every now and then!” Melissa said cheerfully. Edd laughed. Good gravy, was this girl a natural at reading people!

“And Eddy got you...?”

“He forgot...” Edd said in a glum monotone, looking out of the window almost in accepting defeat. “i turned 13 yesterday.”

“He what?!?” Melissa irked in disgust. “How could he forget your 13th birthday, especially after the effort you and Ed went to to make his birthday so special!”

“Ah, I was half expecting it, Mel. I really was...y’know what’s so ironic?” Edd became angry. “Everyone who knew in some way or another let me KNOW they knew...except Eddy. Rolf gave me a honey-dipped candybeet on a stick...though I have to confess Wilfred made better use of it than I did...” Edd admitted. Melissa’s smile crept warmly and slowly across her face as he continued. “Kevin didn’t call me a dork for a WHOLE 20 minutes, can you believe it?!?”

“There’s so much of this story I can’t believe...” Melissa shook her head.
“But Eddy...not a dickiebird. It was like any other day. He’s so wrapped up in this earth-moving casino scheme to even acknowledge I was THERE, let alone 13...”

“That’s just...argh!” Melissa protested in frustration. “ Well don’t you worry, Edd! We’ll make sure your birthday goes with a belated bang on Saturday night!”

“Oh no, Melissa, I’m fine, please!” Edd insisted. “My birthday went pretty well believe it or not... i got an allowance raise of 20 cents by father, mother let me have one extra half-teaspoon of sugar in my earl grey tea that morning for breakfast, my aunt knitted me an honourary “I’m An Upstanding Adult Of Tomorrow” sweater that i’ll treasure at the back of my wardrobe for the rest of my life and oh my....I never realised how meaningless my existence is!” Edd despaired, looking around at the glamourous nostalgia that magnified Melissa’s comparible significance on this planet to his sleepy suburban daily crawl, making him feel as small as an ant. why did she have to come here, Edd asked himself. Why did she have to bring home to me how much of a brick in the wall I am...and always will be?!?

“Edd, are you okay?” Melissa asked with concern after Edd was silent in his thoughts for a few moments too many. He shook his head and blinked.

“Yes, I’m fine..really, I am.” Edd lied, flinching as Melissa patted his hand affectionately. She sat silent for a while, taking her hand away to tuck a stray hair under her hat.

...))

(SONG: She's Faced The toughest times you can imagine...)

"First of all, Double D" she finally said, looking with determination into his eyes. "I never was, and never will be a Las Vegas showgirl Celeb-Luvvie, crystal?"

(SONG:and many times her eyes fought back the tears...)

"Oh no, um" he started, afraid he offended her. She put her hands to his face to silence him.

(SONG:and when her youthful world was about to fall in...)

"Let me finish. You are not, I repeat- NOT!" she dismissed with her hand. " boring and white wash. On the contrary, youre one of, if not THE most interesting and enigmatic people Ive ever encountered."

(SONG:each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears...)

"Oh, well I um" muttered Edd with an embarrassed grin.

"If anyones boring and whitewash, its me." She said sadly, looking out of the window.

(SONG:and a sorrow no one hears...)

"W-what are you saying?" said Edd in disbelief.

(SONG:still rings in midnight silence in her ears...)

"Believe it or not, I was beautiful once, Double D." she sighed.

" "Oh now, this is ludicrous!" spat Edd, standing up and walking to the centre of the room. "If youre referring to what happened earlier on today then youre seriously overreacting"-

"Do you know how nauseating it was to see those three again?!?" she snapped.

Edd stopped still with curiosity.

"Wha-who? The Kankers?" he took a guess.

"Who do you think?" she huffed, pulling her knees up to her chest and glaring with steely eyes at the floor. "Lets just say we have our history."

"Why, what happened?" he asked, sitting back down on the swivel chair with the back to his chest.

"What didnt happen..." she snarled, her face growing dim. "Its because of them-and others-that I left home in the first place." Edd rested his chin on his folded arms attentively as she continued. She slapped her thighs and with a weary sigh walked to the other side of the room. It was darker and less cluttered there. "They were in my old school, Double D." resent crept with stealth into her expression. "Id heard a birdie here and there that Marie especially was pretty jealous of me ever since the Piggy-Bank day dance solo tryouts. We were the last two, they needed one and guess who they picked"

"Uh,Marie?" suggested Edd.

"Huh-No!" snapped Melissa. "Me!"

"Oh, right!" peeped Edd, slightly cowering but with a grin on his face. Melissa sure was cute when she went all pouty.

"They did everything from smearing pork and beans on my locker to telling everyone I had some weird scouserpox that people with Liverpool blood get if they are exposed to sunlight for too long." She despaired. "The hair was the last straw."

Youre telling me that the Kankers are responsible for-gulp-your hair color?" stammered Edd.

"Im afraid so, Edwardo!" huffed Melissa. " One night, about 5
months ago, I stayed behind in textile class because I was putting
together a suit for Daisy. It was her debut as a Candybeet,
you see. Beforehand my dad had a friend of his play the drums.
Anyway, anyway, anyway, I heard something like a rat squeaking
from outside the classroom"

She paced up and down, up and
down and Edd never once took his eyes off her as she gave a
blow-by-blow account of the tyranny that is the Kanker sisters.

"So I stepped out, pushed the door open and BANG!"

Melissa stomped and clapped her hands together, startling poor
fragile Edd, making him jump 3 feet out of his seat. Gingerly
he sat back down.

"Next time, warn me before you do that!" he requested.

"Oh yeah, will do!" nodded Melissa.
"Youll never guess what The Kankers had set up a bucket of permenant blue dye, and it completely saturated my hair! It wouldn't come off! And the more i washed it the stronger the color got!
Heres a picture of me before that happened." She handed him a
picture of her. It was Melissa, all right. Slightly younger,
but with streaming golden curls right down her back.

"See, I told you. I was beautiful once, Double D!" she said stubbornly. Suddenly she realised something. She
finally saw the funny side of it. A side she never saw before until
she confided in Edd.

"Y-yeah, ha ha! it wouldnt come out!" she tittered. "I was up until like 3 am that night washing my hair, and the dye had soaked my face and hands too! I looked like I belonged to the blue man group! ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaa!"
At first Edd looked at her in bewilderment,
especially when she kneeled on the floor laughing, but soon
enough the infectious laughter caught onto him and he was
rolling around giggling with her. Melissa eventually sat up
and rubbed her eyes.

"Oh my ribs!" she gurgled.

“Um, Mel...” Edd started. “I wanna..thank you for listening to me droning on and on back there, I really didn’t mean to”-

“Don’t be silly, Double Dee!” Melissa beamed. “I droned on and on to you about my personal stuff too and i feel tons better for it! that’s what friends are for, right?” She tapped his arm.

“Heh yeah...friends...” Edd bit his lip as Melissa looked back at him warmly. “ Hey D-man! Dont look so
confident, You gotta take the sock off too! Fairs fair!"

"Noooooooooo!" protested Edd. "That is no mans land, Melissa!"

"Yeah but Im a girl!" she scolded with a twinkle in her eye.

"I can see that, but still..." muttered Edd, turning crimson.

"Thats not fair!" protested Melissa, stomping her foot playfully. Edd groaned and stood up.

"Okay, Okay, enough with the cute tantrums, youre driving me nuts!" he said playfully. Slowly he slid off his hat and closed his eyes, dreading Melissas reaction...he waited.

"(SONG:if by chance I should hold her...)

Silence

(SONG:let me hold her for a time...)

"Ur...heh...hello?" He stammered his eyes still closed. silence.
(SONG:but if allowed just one possession...)

"Mel...say something...please?" he murmured with slight panic. Silence. Edd's hands twitched at his sides nervously.
Suddenly he inhaled a warm haze of perfume,
as if someone was standing next to him.
(SONG: I would pick her from the garden...)

he opened his eyes and sure enough, Melissa stood in front of him.

(SONG: To be mine...)

She flicked her eyes up with daunt and said:

"Kiss me, Edd."

(SONG: Be careful how you touch her, for she'll awaken...)

He looked on with utter fear as Melissa moved in closer.
(SONG: and sleep's the only freedom that she knows...)

"With clammy hands Edd grabbed hers.

(SONG:and when you walk into her eyes, you won't believe...)

Blue in its purest form was the shade of Melissa's dilating eyes.

(SONG:The way she's always Paying...

For a debt she never owed...)

She pressed her forehead to Edd's affectionately.(SONG:and a silent wind still blows...)

Edd felt all the enamour in his body rush forward as he cupped Melissa's little face in his hands.
(SONG:that only she can hear...)

She felt her temples tingle as he moved in to kiss her.Their lips about to meet, Melissa closed her eyes...

"(SONG: And so she goes...)

"RING RING!"-Ed's voice crackled destructively through the walkie-talkie just before the two lovebirds could officially seal it with a kiss. They both huffed at his bad timing.
"Well, at least he's consistent." Sighed Melissa, resting her head on Edd's shoulder.
"Y'know...it's times like this I wish
'I' was on a sinking ship in the middle of the Atlantic..."
moaned Edd cynically, his nose buried in her collar.
"OOH Don't mind me, sockhead!" Crooned Eddy through the static.
"Not interrupting anything...am i?"
Edd clambered with panic for his walkie-talkie and near collapsed
with mortification when he saw the access button switched on auto...Eddy had heard the whole thing!
